Doesn't matter if you read it or not, you're bound by it if you signed it. Although I understand the OP's frustration, I don't know that I would have thought to use the credit card's protection in a situation like this. It may have been one step in the process, but I would have thought it would be my responsibility to go after the transmission shop if they refused a refund or to otherwise fix the situation.
