Cheap Generator saves lives in Tornado

A few months ago someone posted about a cheap 800w generator from Harbor Freight, $100 with a $20 coupon for a total of $80. Many responses questioned the quality, noise factor, etc, generally slamming these generators.
Well, being a guy who loves a bargain, I went to HF and bought one. I brought it home, mixed the fuel and started it up. Just a Weed Eater motor, I didn't know whether to plug something in, or edge the lawn.
Jump ahead to yesterday's tornado in OKC/Moore, Okla area.
I was watching the local weather people tracking this storm on TV and just as it was crossing I44 about 4 miles south of my house the electricity went out. My real concern was that my daughter, her husband and my two grandchildren were in Moore, OK at the Warren theatre watching Iron Man 3, and when the TV went out it looked like the storm might be tracking for that area.
Now to the cheap generator; I went to the garage, grabbed the 800w generator, two pulls and it started, I grabbed an extension cord and plugged it into the TV in our guest room (closest to the garage), it took about 3 minutes. The weather radar indicated that the tornado was headed straight for Moore, I texted my son in law (cell phones weren't working, but text did) and told him about the storm, I told him to leave and drive south immediately. He did and when he was about a half mile south of the Warren theatre he saw the tornado hit and pass through that area. They had to drive about 30 miles south/west/north and back east to get back to our house. Lots of roads closed with debris blocking the way.
So, the cheap generator paid for itself yesterday. Later I did crank up the 5500 watt unit for power to the rest of the house and today about 1:00 we had service restored.
Thanks to the person who originally posted about this cheap generator.

  • I now own 3 of the Honda EU1000 generators, but I have owned the 800w Harbor Freight genny. Other than having to change out the cheap spark plug, I really can't complain about it. It ran for several days during two major storms. While it is not a Honda, it wasn't too bad on the noise. They are a good generator to have around.
  • I have camped in a couple spots where the little HF generator was being used and it wasn't too obnoxious. Not great but I've experienced worse. Last Easter down in Florida a group pulled into the campground and fired up a construction style generator and ran non-stop for the whole 3 day weekend. Another group pulls in and they have a Miller welder/generator. Needless to say it wasn't the most pleasant weekend.
  • For camping maybe not HF gens. But don't judge every product by just one set of rules or opinions. One man's junk may be anothers gold.
  • Most people slam them as camping generators, not as a cheap emergency source of power. Obnoxiously loud generators are not a problem in an emergency, but they are not appropriate when camping and RVing recreationally, and that is what these forums are about.
  • Wow, fast thinking, good going!

Just goes to show you that it doesn't always take the best tool to get the job done.
  • So glad that you were able to get in touch with the family, and save them. I hope that they told others in the theater that the storm was coming.....did the theater get leveled too?

Yes, those cheap little HF tools (and in this case the genset) are cheap, and probably won't last you a lifetime, but they do the job (for the most part) and come in handy for those occasional jobs.

I've still got the Craftsman tools I bought about 40 years ago.....but I also buy some less expensive HF tools to keep around the house (junk drawer in the kitchen, or out in the shed by the pool)...just in case!

HF may be cheap....and they may be "junk" to some people, but they are also life savers, when you need them.....

    Thanks for your story!

I wonder if that little generator would power my electric weed eater:h Then, I'd have the sound of a more powerful weed eater:B
