Yeah, cats will keep them away.
There are a lot of rodentia around my neighborhood, this year. I think I have one in the yard shed, again. What I found works is to remove one or other, shelter or food source. Timed correctly, removing a Winter stash of food or removing nests and entrances pushes them along to different locations. Sometimes that's difficult like the guy who has his fleet storage next to the Oak trees producing acorns. In those cases, trapping or hunting bring the quickest resolution to the problem.
