CHiPs ... the television show

"Charge" over the air television station has been running the old CHiPs television show. Remember Ponch and Jon? I watched it when originally aired, seems like a life-time ago. So my wife and I are now sucked into watching all the reruns and completely enjoying it.

I've noticed something in the show. It's very subtle and if you are not looking for it you'll never notice it. But being an RV owner with a passion, traveling on the roads and pointing out to my wife every time we see a camper on the road, I just suppose it's normal now to notice RV's, motor homes, travel trailers and such.

So ... if you are a fan of CHiPs, have you ever noticed that on almost EVERY episode of CHiPs there is an RV of some sort in the background, somewhere in the show. I noticed, every episode. I know, even 40 years ago, television shows never showed anything by accident (on purpose). Everything, all details are planned. So I wonder what was going on in the mind of the producers when they were filming CHiPs to include a background fill in with an RV somewhere, like I said, in almost every episode and very subtle.

Thoughts anyone?
  • Well Dutch, you put a smile on my face with this one, a big smile!

I quit watching TV many years ago, in the late 70's, quit cold turkey and haven't watched it since.

But!, when I still watched it, I have to say that Chips was one of my absolute faves! I watched it every time it was on, wouldn't miss it for anything. Same with Hogans Heroes...

I have to admit, I do not remember the RV thing you mention. I don't recall seeing them on the show. Erik Estrada I remember well, along with the others that made the show popular.

Not sure what it was about that show, but I really liked it.

Now I'm going to have to go dig up the old shows and watch them again so I can be more observant.

Very cool, thanks for the smile and the memory! :)
  • I loved that show! I think there was an episode where these bad guys were running an illegal casino in an old motor home.
  • Now I've got that theme song in my head!

Another good one from that era was Emergency! Rampart.....
  • Thanks downtheroad.
I searched some on the internet and found a couple. These episodes specifically had the RV as part of the plot.

This was the truck camper that rolled over. 2 kids were riding in the back. The mother got ejected from the front seat and the dad (driver) ended up with a broken back.

    Wish I could find more.
  • Oh, don't get me started on Adam 12... :) Love that show too as a kid.

That was late 60's-early 70's and I know all those scenes too! :)

  • Very interesting! Maybe it was some kind of dressing room kinda thing.
I read that a lot of times you'll see fancy cars in the background belong to stars, producers, etc.
There are a number of Adam 12 episodes where you can see Kent McCord's light blue Corvette in the background.
  • Oh yeah.. Seems to always be a slide in cab over camper or a small Shasta TT to the Winnebago motor homes of the time (late 70's to early 80's)

Remember, Ponch LIVED in an old motor home.. Think it was a Winnebago about 30' long?

Then you always see the same vehicles in all the different hwy scenes where they are riding side by side... :)

I lived down there in So Cal during that time, and today recognize all the land marks of that time. Our family moved out of So Cal in 1977 when I was 14 years old, but I still remember all those different hwy scenes and landmarks of the time...

How about watching the original "Gone in 60 Seconds".. Same deal there too.. I lived in Carson, CA as a kid and know all those scenes!

Love the old So Cal movies.. I recognize so much!

Thanks for reminding me of that! I too get the old CHiPs shows and have been watching them too!

    Mitch
