Class A or Bigger Truck?

Can your truck (or any of your current vehicles) be used as a tow'd if you get an A? If not, then you might have an additional expense there.

If I already had a 5W I really liked, I would just get a new truck.

I love my class A and would not go to a 5er. But if you like your 5er to me it is a no brainer. Get a truck and be happy!

I've heard a lot of people that went from a FW to a Class A have gone back to the FW. For me, I think a FW gives you more space than a Class A and you don't have to tow a vehicle to drive around while your Class A is set up for camping. I've considered upgrading to a motorhome from a TT, but after going to a lot of RV shows I think if I were to upgrade, I'd go with a FW and pickup truck combo. I do like the idea of being able to utilize the RV while in travel, but for me....i'd be driving either way, so everyone else but me would enjoy those benefits. My problem with a pick up is that I have 3 dogs and even a crew cab isn't enough room for them in the truck.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am leaning towards a bigger truck. All the Class A's I have looked at in my price range don't have a floor plan I really like. I just didn't know if it would be easier to travel with a Class A than towing the 5er. Plus, the new truck option would be cheaper and therefore easier to convince to wife.

Considering you already have the camper that meets your needs, I vote for just getting a heftier truck. It will be much cheaper, well within your budget, and your camping "style" will not change.

Considering you are comfortable with a truck and trailer, you appreciate the ability to separate the two, leave the trailer behind and take the truck for running around without having to break camp every time you want to do something.

Although a CLASS-A affords a certain amount of luxury and convenience over a truck-trailer combination, you will probably need to consider a toad unless you don't mind breaking camp to run-around. If getting a toad, will you keep your 1500 as use it, or purchase something else. If you end up getting another vehicle, then you're now adding to the $100K budget, probably, over budget.

The choice is yours. But if I were in the position you described, I'm one of those that advocates getting the heftiest truck you can afford. So, I'll go ahead and say it: a 3500/F15 duly, crew cab, diesel will provided you all you're looking for in a tow vehicle. Pluse, you can sit 5 people, or 2 adults and 3 very large dogs!

The decision is still yours, and yours only. You also have the option to do nothing. Just keep your current rig. Nothing wrong with that. Personally, I see no difference towing 5 miles or 500 miles. 500 miles is simply 100 - 5 miles increments!

How big is your family? It will be harder to find a class A that can sleep a family than it will be keeping your 5er. Also, you will want a towed vehicle for getting around - one big enough for your family that is light enough to be towed by the class A you choose.

I didn't ask about towing capacity.

My vote is for the Class A. It's a nice way to travel. Everything is available while you're in motion.
And that is really nice when you're sitting in a traffic backup.

But, a bigger truck would be cheaper.

My 1500 has a towing capacity a little over 9,0000lbs and my fifth wheel is around 6,000lbs dry. So, it's enough truck but I think it my struggle on steeper grades.
