I have cleaned our carpet several times. I rent the commercial type and as long as you don't saturate the carpet, after extracting the water , it is damp. I wait for warmer days when doors/windows can be open. I also fill the tank with clean water and "rinse" the carpet after cleaning it. It pulls more soap and dirt out and seems to stay clean longer. I don't know what's under ours, but there has not been any damage from cleaning it. Have seen several who had professional carpet cleaners come to their site and clean the carpets. They have one that is narrower and one called a wide track - get the smaller one as it fits better along the bed etc. I always get hand tools too so I can do areas the cleaner won't fit into.
