Southbound I-95 (2 lanes south and a breakdown lane)in South Carolina. 2:30PM. Travelling at 62MPH. Clear day, dry road.
We're towing our 37' 5'r in the travel lane. An 18 wheeler is passing in the passing lane. I watch him (in my side mirror) coming up on me at a good 'takeover' speed. His front wheels get up to beside my trailer wheels. I notice his takeover speed drops, to same as ours. Thought that was curious, so I keep watching. Then his truck starts drifting to the right...towards the wheels on our 5'r. And then more quickly to the right.
I turn quickly right into the breakdown lane. His front bumper comes within 2" of my trailer side wall...at the wheels. As I hit the breakdown lane, my wheels hit the rumble strips. Truck driver hears my rumbling wheels (or maybe it was my wife's screaming) and he jerks his wheel to the left. He awoke.
All is good again. He continues his pass...and waves to me. I give him a friendly, understanding wave back. Hey... stuff happens. But it could have easily been the last thing that ever happened to us. Fortunately, I was watching him. Next rest stop I had to pull over and take a walk. I don't normally let these things bother me. But that one kept me shaking for a while.
