clumping spices

WI is very humid in the summer. We haven't camped in a month and are readying the TC for our trip. I went to check spice levels and they are solid blocks.

What do you do to keep this from happening? I thought they were in pretty airtight containers (the originals).

We don't have this issue in the house and we don't have AC.

Any suggestions would be great.

thank you.
  • If the containers are shakers with moderately small holes (and you use them as such), a little rice in the jars should help. It works very nicely for salt in a saltshaker.

Storing the jars in a ziploc bag with some rice in the bag (outside the jars) would also work pretty well, I'd think. Other things work to absorb the excess moisture, but rice has the advantages of being obviously safe for food and of not generally introducing unwanted flavors.
  • The DW takes the tops of the containers (screw tops or pop tops) and puts a piece of Saran / Plastic wrap over the top. Then snaps or screws on the original lit. The plastic is just enough to seal things.

  • I take the little silicone packet or plastic barrel from my tylenol etc pill bottles and put them in the spice jars. Dont use the ones that come in your shoes lol..
  • thank you for your help. I'll try these and see which works best for my needs.

    You're all so smart.
  • before we moved to the desert we used a little rice like suggested before. Worked like a charm. Now we are trying to put moisture into everything we can

  • Dried beans, like pintos, if jars are big enough. Most spices contain an anti clumping agent. Opening them over stoves when cooking puts a lot of moisture in them and putting back on the shelves with it in there will do that. Just humidity outside won't unless he containers are not closed tight.
  • Do not try the cracker. It works for a few days and than becomes a mess. Rice, either regular or instant works very well. I would guess the little packets do also.
  • Bring them inside? Just put them on your packing list, take them from your kitchen and you'll have only one set to deal with and fresh ones every time rather than just leaving them in the RV.
