Commercial vs. Recreational RV insurance while gate guarding

While exploring alternative insurers for the RV I saw that some insurers made a commercial vs. recreational use distinction. If you are contracting out as a gate guard, full timing in your RV and you have an on-site accident or an accident while traveling between assignments can the insurer use the lack of commercial RV insurance to void your claim? Does the commercial class refer to an RV that you rent out? Does extended workamping activity move you out of the Rec RV coverage class?

Currently my Rec. RV coverage is @ $600 ( 1993 24' C ) and a commercial policy would be @ $1300. Expense is not an issue for me but an insurer deciding I'm not a Rec. RV user would be, I've been doing passive site security, oil field or industrial locations with minimal activity, for 5 yrs.

  • Check with your insurer to be sure. No one on RV.net is going to cover you in the event of a denied claim. It sounds like it is pretty simple, but things never are. Example: My current policy requires me to get a rider to sell my rig on consignment, yet many other companies do not. One size does not fit all insurance policies.
  • We did RV shows selling stuff for awhile. Using the RV to haul retail product was considered commercial use.
I agree that working as a work camper would not be.

Commercial usually indicates for hire. As in you are towing new RV's from manufacturer to dealer. Or you are using your RV for profit. Which you are not. Are you? What your doing as a gate guard is selling your body for XXX dollars a day. Your RV is a place for you to sleep and eat, just like a permanent house would be.

    I agree.

Your work involves you, not your coach, and as long as that is clearly established, then you don't need commercial use coverage.
