From my house in Detroit, if you drove SOUTH, crossed into Ohio and turned left and headed east.. And I went NORTH, crossed the Big Mack (Bridge) and turned left.. You would get to the Atlantic ocean before I arrived in Wisconscon, assuming we both drove the same speed and number of hours a day.
Ahem... I live in Utica, MI... Just a bit north of Detroit. Every year I take the trailer, (a Bullet Premier 31BHPR - so not a small thing), from home to Lake Winnebago... Sometimes I take a night off near Milwaukee at my BiL's house but I have, on several occasions, driven Utica MI to practically Oshkosh WI. It's much quicker than driving to the Atlantic coast which is where I used to live and still visit, (though rarely).
I think you are going the wrong way...
