Conversion van - max towing capacity?

I would like a conversion van. I've had a Chevy Express 1500 for 10 years and being very tall - it works for me. It's been really hard to determine what the max towing ability is. I'm willing to custom order a 3500 chassis with minimum trim (4 captains chairs, no couch..etc)
What can I expect for a tow rating for a gas engine?

The 2014 tow ratings claim the Express 3500 short wheel base with a 6.0 V-8 will tow 10,000 if a cargo van and 9700 if a passenger van. The conversion companies do not seem to commit to a tow rating.

Which is the conversion van based on?
Will that increase if I remove all but two front seats?
Has anyone done this recently?
TIA!
Brian

  • It probably is a 1:1 ratio because GVWR/payload is most likely going to be your limiting factor, not the trailer weight. A conversion van has a lot of weight added to it when it's converted, and that's weight that you have to subtract from the vehicle's maximum payload.

The weight of the trailer is less important than the tongue weight it'll be putting on the van.
  • I was hoping to have a good estimate before purchasing so I can match it up with my intended trailer (7000 dry, 32 ft, 4000 CCC). If anyone out there has weighed their conversion van, I sure would appreciate knowing how much the conversion weight impacts the towing capacity. Is it necessarily a 1-1 relationship?
  • weigh the conversion van, compare that weight to the stated weightof the standard van. gives you an idea as to how much less it is capable of handling.
