And yes, driving is necessary, that's why the general public accepts thousands of highway deaths. Cost vs benefit, and highway deaths don't shut down the economy.

How did the hospitals handle 810,000 flu hospitalizations where they needed respirators and masks and beds ...and there was no panic?? the flu is communicable and killed 60,000 people but did not cause panic and a worldwide depression !!
