Counting propane as tongue weight.

How many of you do? I'm not sure I should really count full tanks. After all how many times do you travel with FULL tanks of propane? For me. Both tanks have only been full ONE time, and that was on the way home from the dealer. They will prolly NEVER both be full at the same time again, and only rarely will one of them be full. So I'm not really excited about counting them for tongue weight. and lets be honest. 20lb ain't all that much anyway

  • Don't forget the batteries also. If you have two batteries, that adds quite o bit of weight close to the tongue.
  • Of course I count whatever wt. is on the tongue whether it's propane, etc. and really don't understand your question since you sure can't just add this or that to get your tongue wt. since how you load your trailer will be a major factor in what your tongue actually weighs. As you said maybe you only have 30lbs vs. 60lb in propane .... what are you adding that to????? ... that "to" is going to have many times the variance of that 30lb variance in just propane wt. Therefore you have to weigh the tongue anyway and then all you have to do is to know approx. how much propane you have for that wt. and then add or subtract that as needed, but I don't see why you would need to be that accurate. In the overall scheme of things that 30lbs variance in the amt of propane will not be a major player in tongue wt. one way or another once you have a "real tongue wt" from actually weighing your tongue. I consider tongue wt. to be approx + or - around 100lbs of whatever number I get from my Sherline scale when I have my trailer fully loaded for camping.

    Calculating tongue weight.....propane weight matters

Actual weighed tongue weight......dual full 20# cylinders is only 40# or so.

So what about a full fresh water tank :H

    Still shouldn't matter.
Tongue weight of trailer packed/ready to go camping should not exceed tow vehicle's capacity.

  • Reason I was wondering. Everyone always says DRY weight is not right, it dosen't take into account propane. I was just pointing out. Propane weight ain't all that much, and like mentioned. IF you have to worry about it. You are too close.

    AND.... it's late, and I ain't sleepy. :B
  • Terry, I do. (use full tanks when looking at tongue weight.) It just adds to the cushion/safety margin when figuring tongue weight.

Besides, if you are that close that you have to consider the weight of full or half full propane tanks then you are too close.

If 20 pounds is not that much one way or the other, then why do you care? I certainly would not. It is not like it will change the size of the tow vehicle needed or the hitch spring bar ratings.
