Those who claim the CG doesn't know what they are doing simply don't have a full understanding of how the entire CG is wired.
Rather than get into a long drawn out explanation, that John Q public won't understand anyway. The CG simply states no 50 amp rigs on 30 amp sites.Upgrading their electric seems to be the solution but the cost associated with upgrading could be enormous?
Upgrading could involve new transformers, bigger power lines etc. We are not talking about a residential situation. It's more like upgrading the power to an entire community.
If prohibiting 50 amp rigs from 30 amp sites keeps the electric flowing reliably vs. gambling/hoping that 50 amp rigs won't push the aging system over the edge. Then the CG is enforcing a policy that works for them, which seems reasonable enough to me.
As WRVPO stated, a 50 amp rig on a dog bone will stress the system more than a 30 amp rig. The issue is not limited to the the 30 amp pedestal breaker.
I understand it well and the same number of fifty am rigs with30 amp dog bones 30 amp rigs will not draw more than the 30 amp rigs, regardless of how deficient worn or old wiring and breaker boxes of the campground. Ran into one in Indiana.
To some extent what you say is true. However as Mr. Wizard mentioned.
A 30 amp RV will generally not draw a full 30 amps. It may draw 20-22 amps on average. It can generally only run 1-2 major appliances.
Meanwhile a 50 amp RV can easily run at 28 amps, right up to the tripping point.
The rule is not about one RV and one 30 amp breaker. It is more about several RV's and 1-200 amp sub panel.
When those 50 amp RV's trip the sub panel breaker it creates a major problem/hassle for the CG and RV owners.
You have to see the big picture and not just little ol'me in MY RV.
You need to see several RV's and the amount of power they all draw on one 200 amp branch circuit vs. just considering just the 30 amp pedestal.
