I had to unplug the door opener so that stolen remote wouldn't work should the low-lifes try and get into the garage.
I have seen 3 types of garage door openers.
1: Very old and I seriously doubt any are still in service, NOT PROGRAMMABLE
2: very common, There are some DIP (Dual Inline Package is what that means by the way) switches, usually 6-10 of them, and a matching set of them in the remote, IF THEY MATCH Ie 10001010 on both,it works, if they do not (you changed the door to 11001010 they don't Reprogramming may requre a screwdriver, Well, actually a very small screwdriver is very useful to flip the switches.
3: And I have seen only one of these, about 100 yards from where I'mparked,, EACH remote has it's own electronic signal and code. THe receiver passes the code to a computer and the computer both logs the key press and, if authorized, opens the, in this case gate, but Door works.
If the member gets suspended, A few key strokes and the comnputer logs the ATTEMPT to open the gate, but the gate remains closed.
