Darn Thief
I went out to my TV this morning and the contents of the center console were laying on my front seat. Some clown took my seven year old Garmin GPS. But they left the mounting bracket and power cord....

I'm told used stolen GPS units are worth a LOT more than we think.
The thief, or more likely the person who bought it from the thief, goes into a place like WM where they'll be dealing with an under-paid often un attentive clerk and buys a similar new unit. A few days later they go back to the store and return the GPS as not working. Except the older stolen unit is in the box not the new one.
They now have a brand new unit for $20 that has the latest software and a clean serial number.
I'm also told the serial number on most of these units is software-based and so the older unit can be erased and reloaded with new software and a cloned serial number from a legit unit.
So, I'm a little unclear on the concept. They take the older unit back in the packaging for a new unit. So didn't they have to buy a new unit first to get the refund or exchange? If so, what is the point?
