Dash Cam

Bought a dash cam for the rig. With the guy making a left turn a cross my bow and causing thousands of dollars in damage, I've been thinking. People cutting in front of me at highway speeds, merging traffic, people running stop signs and lights, motorcycles cutting in and out, bicyclists, joggers and jaywalkers. I think a video dash cam could pay off someday. Plus record some scenic drives. Anybody else have a dash cam or thought about it? They are not that expensive.

    I'm using the DVR-207 from this seller;

    It has gone up $1 since I bought mine, the price now is $49.40. Be prepared to spend another $30-$40 for a quality memory card.

    Lot's of discussion in this thread;
    A recommended dash cam brand/model?

    Boy, if you use that big bracket and attach that thing to your dash around here you are going to get a ticket. Nothing allowed on the dash or in your line of site at all. I've know people that got tickets for there sun glasses hanging from there rear view mirror. Now, if the screen was folded down and the camera was setting right in the middle of the glass flat on the dash board then it would be legal.

    Part of the reason for the dash cam is to keep the cops honest. If they see that big thing on there they are not going to like you. It's like radar detectors. If they know you have one they are more likely to give you a speeding ticket. If they don't see one on your dash they might let you go 5 MPH if you look like a respectable older person.

    I have been thinking about getting a dash cam since our truck is invisible. Has to be with the number of cars and pickup drivers that pull out in front of it.

    I have driven with my headlights on, since I was 16, a long time ago, still people can't seem to see me. I think they can hear me now, with my new Air Horn :B ! I was never impressed with the weak a** horn on my Ram, problem solved!!

    Thought I would add a sample of the dash cam video. It is a three minute loop. The best part is the end.

    that one looks like my $17.88 special with the drop down screen. my new "expensive" one $52, has the screen built into it. I mount it at the top of my windshield and my flipped down sun visor hides it. if they start arresting everybody who has a sun visor down the courts will be full.

    It isn't on the dash, it is on the windshield and is above my line of sight. It is mostly between the rear view mirror and windshield with the camera slightly below the mirror. Almost invisible and certainly not very noticeable. Completely legal in Ohio.

    I'm not concerned too much about speeding tickets, if I speed then I should be ticketed and fined.
  • Oh, OK, I thought in the picture it looked like it sat on the dash. If it hangs behind the rearview mirror it would be fine.

    Well they would need to see mine first, mine is 1-3/4" in diameter and about 3" long, it is placed right in front of the rear-view mirror. I don't see it at all.
    I am not worried about a speeding ticket either, it is the idiot that cut me off or turns in front of me and then tries to lie their way out of it. I will attache pictures later.

    So I didn't want a large unit hanging down around the mirror, I wanted small and desecrate, this unit filled the bill and good video.

    For those who are considering, but haven't purchased... a very good website that give unbiased reviews, and is NOT brand specific:

    Dash Cam Talk; dash camera comparison website.

    The Dash Cam Talk does a good job of reviewing all the brands. Having gone thru 3 different low cost Dash Cams I can say that they are pretty accurate. Their top rated one the G1W is the best that I have tried with the DVR 207 a dismal second with a lot of fakes.
    Last place is the GS 1000 poorest quality and almost all on the market were fakes.
    That has been my experence, yours may be different.
