deep freezer while boondocking?

Im not much of a cook, I can run a gas grill which is what I want to do, is stock up a deep freezer and live out of that. My idea was if I run a generator first thing in the morning while getting ready for work and running it an hour at night, is that going to keep a freezer from thawing out when its 30+ degrees and humid? Or should I get solar panels and an inverter, perhaps a smaller fridge? The idea is that I can stay out boondocking without needing to get provisions, unless I run short on water or gas.

A 50 gallon water tank, how many showers is that?

Perhaps, but in any case, you want the inverter. I doubt you're going to keep running a generator like that for very long.
  • Another option would be an extreme ice chest like a Pelican of Yeti.
Stuff will stay frozen for 5 days.
  • I'm skeptical about running it two hours a day, but you could help yourself out if it was full of frozen food and had been running for a few days before you left home. More of a mass and it would take longer to thaw. That being said, you have a lot more to lose if it doesn't work. If you want to experiment, why not fill it with bags of ice, instead of a cup of ice and see how you make out?
  • Afraid to ask, what is a navy shower, a bucket?

Never mind, googled that. I dont have a fridge yet, what would be the best fridge with boondocking in mind?
  • You can run your own test on the freezer while at home. Run the freezer till it reaches desired temperature, then simply put in a cup of water and let it freeze up real good.

Then test your theory. Run the freezer one hour and then unplug it. Wait 12 hours and see if the water is thawed. If it is, then you have to run the freezer more often. Test for a few days in a row until you reach that spot where the water stays frozen between "on" times.

Of course, the hotter the ambient temperature around the freezer, the more it has to run.

Solar would work provided you have enough to keep batteries charged and working.

The longer you run the water taking a shower will be directly proportional to how many showers you can take on a given amount of water. We practice "navy"showers when camping. It's just someting we do. We get 8 showers out of 25 gallons of water this way.
