As far as the cost of fuel, diesels get better mileage, in many cases far better.
I had two 460 cu in Ford F250s best mileage 10 mpg, current Cummins 20+ mpg empty on highway, and about 14 mpg pulling a 7k empty GN 30’ four horse trailer.
Maybe it was a great deal to him but I plugged in some assumption and blue book he paid well over the high retail value...of course blue book has it's issues but it certainly doesn't support his idea.
What were you doing wrong that you only got 10mpg? We have a V10 F250 and it gets just shy of 15mpg. Are you comparing 40yr old trucks to 5yr old trucks? Diesel does do better but not 100% better.
