I was also medically retired from the military. Being unqualified for further military service does NOT automatically mean you are also disabled for Social Security purposes. While the military has higher standards for physical and mental fitness for duty, those who don't meet those standards and are separated or retired can in some cases be qualified for civilian employment. That is why qualification for Social Security disability by those who are medically discharged or retired from the military is not automatic. It took me three times to get my Social Security disability benefits. I would rather be working. But between my disabilities and the general reluctance of civilian employers to hire veterans, I have not worked full time in civilian employment since I was retired in 1996. I would go back to work tomorrow if I were offered a job. But I'm not holding my breath.
