I don't unhook anything. As far as putting locks on all the tow bar pieces, I use a couple but not enough to keep me from unhooking the toad in an emergency without keys.
OP What value do you think the cord would be to someone? I'd say there is very little market for it and almost no value for a thief to sell it. Consider also that it would not have the female ends.
You could devise some kind of lock or clamp to help secure it. Even something with a simple secure type of bolt would help you concern perhaps? Or just buy a second cable as a backup?
