Do I need a passport to drive into Canada?

No..but you do require 'proper' ID. Like a NEXUS pass or some other gov't issued document. And you will get hassled for not having a passport. Plus...don't you need a US passport to go home?

X2. In a former job that involved a lot of travel to and from Canada and the Caribbean the company lawyers gave that advice. If you enter another country on a drivers license it’s a courtesy of that country. If you use a passport, all sorts of treaties and international laws apply. If you have any unexpected problems while there, that’s a big deal.

If your gf had only the card,and some emergency came up where she needed to suddenly fly home from Canada, she'd be SOL. You can get a U.S. passport real fast if you pay a premiun rate for acclerated processing.

Have her get the “land passport” if you need it quick. It is a card like a drivers license and allows you Canada and Mexico but I got mine in about 2 weeks compared to a month or so for a full passport.

Last month I accidentally went into Canada with an expired passport (2 weeks) which is perfectly legal.

Came back and the US Customs never mentioned it and waved me right through.

Ah the good old days. It took Obama 3 years to get his birth certificate. and I have the same issue (Mother re-married and my father adopted us)

NOTE: I mention Obama for one reason only.. IT TOOK THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 3 years.. How long before I can go to Canada and back??????
