Depends on which brand and model. Modern tech WDHs have integrated sway control, instead of old technology friction bars.
And I know this is a completely novice question: but I don't understand, is the WDH permanently attached to the trailer, or to the hitch receiver on the truck? Is the WDH something I can move to a different trailer (ie, say I had two trailers) or do I install it on one trailer and it kind of becomes part of the trailer?
It's a separate piece of equipment. You can have brackets attached to the A-frame that stay.
Some old technology WDHs require drilling into the A-frame while newer technology ones, like the Equal-i-zer, use bolt-on parts.
Newer technology ones are easier to transfer to another trailer.
