Do you carry extra fuel

RotoPax has spare tire mounts if one wants to go that route. Their stuff is expensive, but you get what you pay for, and you can buy locking handles to ensure the gas cans stay put.

with my 04 duramax I only had a 26 gallon tank. While along major citys/interstates, fueling isn't an issue, when you travel in the midwest off of major roads, through small towns, that small a tank leads to often filling up after 100 miles or so in order to make it to the next open station. I've been places where 250 miles between gas stations happens, especially at night. So when going in those areas I have an extra 10 gallons in yellow cans that I used.

Feel sorry for the gas folks with 25 gallon tanks and <10mpg, tougher on them.



Travel in eastern oregon and you'll find that when stations close at night, common because no self serve on gas allowed, you can be a LONG way between open stations. That will end this summer when counties with less than 40,000 people will be allowed to have self serve at stations between 8pm and 8am.

Diesel is self serve, but if they close the station for gas, they almost 100% of the time shut off power to the pumps.

With the 2015 and a 36 gallon tank, not an issue.

We very rarely travel on interstate roads to the places we camp and we carry a 5 gal can of diesel on most of our camping trips. It's a super simple thing to prep and carry in the bed of the truck.

I've used it a couple of times when the GPS said to "turn here" to get to the filling station that ended up being boarded up. and another time when we were having a really great conversation with the family, lost track of the time and distance and the Low Fuel light kicked on. I'm really glad I had the extra 5 gallons. That was the "old" truck with the 24 gallon tank and the "new" truck has a 34 (or 36?) gallon tank .. I still carry the extra 5 gallons though.

After parking the rig (when we get home), I dump the 5 gallons into the truck and say thanks for the piece of mind!

Maybe you don't need it, but I sure do. I don't need to stop at a pleasant rest area/park rather than a noisy, busy gas station, but I sure like it better. I don't need to wonder whether I can get into that little crowded gas station, so I don't.

4x4 Dodger..thanks for the input. I know there will be a 'shock' but I am for sure not qualified to judge the amount. I sorta figured by having the jugs tight into the tire, that would reduce the 'shock'. The tire stanchion is well afixed to the frame and I am hoping for no issues there.

The other thought is to buy one of those cargo racks that use the reciever. I still see the same problem with the whipping, but other than carry the jugs inside, in a box in the tub...I am running short of ideas.

We like a park that is 35 miles from fuel. Amazing number of folks pull in worried they won't make it to the next station.

Maybe some of them will start carrying a little extra, work on prior planning, or both ;)

But, I am trying to create my own, based on his...I am going to see if I can get two fuel can carriers like Smiitybuilt, and if they have a metal plate, thread a wide cargo strap thru to secure them, and then run the strap around the spare...one can on each side of the tire. There is one can in this pic and a step or whatever that is on the right outside. I'd just put another can carrier there.

You probably have considered the significant increase in weight you would be adding to the fasteners/welds that hold the spare tire to the vehicle. You must also account for "shock loads". This could be very significant when all that weight goes up a bump and then comes banging down with two or three times the force of the weight alone.

I would re-think this idea a bit. Or re-design the spare tire carrier and fastening to at least three times its current capacity.

There are a lot of things that I don't need, that I have. But I sure enjoy having them!

I carry a 5 gallon jerry can if I am camping into unknown places. If I am heading around my neck of the woods camping then I usually dont.
