Do you drain your hot water tank?

Just wondering if you drain your hot water tank after each trip out or if you leave water in the tank when you will be using it in a couple of weeks? Does this cause any problems with water left in the tank?

I fill with chlorinated city water. If there is well water involved I may take a different approach.

  • I rarely drain mine, even for several weeks. Never had a problem. I do usually sanitize at least once a year.
  • I put a ball valve on the drain and I drain every time and then I stick a small tygon tube in it and siphon the rest. Mine doesn't get used regularly. Craig
  • I tend to leave it, however, as someone pointed out, if the water has a high sulphate content, you can get a rotten egg smell. A magnesium anode doesn't help either.
  • A week i will leave, longer I will drain. You can end up with rotten smell that is hard to get rid of. Depends how hot it is outside also. Or if you leave the tank full and the fresh water full and run some through now and then. Then you can leave it longer JMHO.
  • If not going to be used for a couple of weeks, I drain. easy enough to do.
