What I think is not addressed is "how' one RV's.
If you are a weekend camper i.e. two days out and you are back home vs full time or snowbird, or long stay dry camping makes a BIG difference how we use the blacks tanks, how often they are dumped, and when chemicals are a necessity.
Ever been eating your breakfast in the RV at a CG and suddenly get a strong stanky whiff when one of your neighbors are dumping? That's because they don't use chemicals in their tanks.
That said when I used the RV on just weekends I still used the chemicals. Same reason porta potties at events use chemicals. I'd like to see any of you sit in one of those without the blue stuff added! :B
My drug of choice for the black tank for 10 years and counting.
There are two different kinds in the same package. One works the other doesn't. Look for the words in bold type, "Powerful Odor Control" on the front of box.

- D_E_BishopExplorerI do not use any chemicals while camping, now you may ask what camping is so google it. When I leave the S&B heading to the storage yard, I empty, flush and add a dose of tank stuff. While traveling, just water.
of course there are three hundred eighty six thousand, 600, 21 different posts so gamble, pick one to use. - CavemanCharlieExplorer III

Chemical poop stinks!
Working vapor barriers and dihydrogen monoxide works
Even thought I had heard about it before I had forgotten about dihydrogen monoxide and had to look it up. I agree that is's great stuff. - PadlinExplorerOur black tank vent is about a foot from the bathroom vent. With the vent open and a breeze in the wrong direction, one can certainly smell it inside. No such when using a good chemical destinker. There is no set rule on the use, if you need it, you need it.
- jplante4Explorer IINever had any issues with the black tanks getting plugged until I started using chemicals on a regular basis. Had to get in there with the high pressure flush wand to free things up. Stopped using chemicals. Everything's fine. I do flush the black tank on a regular basis.
I think people use chemicals for the same reason people leave their porch light on all night. - doxiemom11Explorer IIWe use nothing but water. No stink and no problems. Generous amounts when flushing is all you need. And, of course it stinks in the tank, but if you have odor inside or out, something is not right. Neither you or your neighbors should smell what's in your tank.

- Dennis12Explorerwe use the kitchen sink so that the black tank does not stink.

Sorry that's just not correct to just make a blanket statement like that to a new RV'er. I full time and use them ALL the time.
There are 2 types. Some are just that, nothing more than a deodorizer.
The correct ones actually 'break down waste' and paper along with a odor 'control'.
It depends WHERE you RV. RV just once and sit at a CG with no sewage hookup where you have to break camp to dump IN FLORIDA? You won't leave home without a good black tank chemical.
When you flush it is a straight opening to the black tank. There is NO p-trap like on your residential toilet to separate you from the sewage.
You start filling up that black tank with waste and go to flush? That smell and all that bacteria does come into your coach if not treated.
And lastly all I can say is my sensors work 100% of the time because I do use chemicals. :W
THIS^^^ and as said before there cheep.
