Any time the topic of dumping comes up people will post their dumping routines. These routines usually range from dump and run to multiple flushes and even sanitize the tank. The question is why would you sanitize your black tank? And how would you go about sanitizing the tank anyway?

I keep things simple and consistent and have been doing it this way for many years. Apon dumping the black, I flush 2 toilet bowls of fresh water, a squirt of Dawn dish liquid and a scoop of happy camper.....repeat after each dump. The most important thing to remember is never let the black tank go dry.

What I use to do after that last dumping before driving home, give it a 5 gal pail full of water and a cup of laundry soap. Let it slosh around all the way home and dump it on our next outing.

Sanitizing a black tank indicates someone has issues - mental issues that is. The tank holds, on a temporary basis, pee, poop, paper. Rinsing to remove as much as you can makes sense, rinsing to clean any internal level sensors makes sense. Any need to more is nuts.

I don't have to worry about it any more. We don't dry camp, so I had it removed and a residential toilet installed. I still have the gray tank and it's valve is always open as is the black tank valve Back when we had it; We used the proper chemicals and dumped once a week. Then I would flush it with ten gallons of water. When not in use I would keep a few gallons of water with the chemicals in it. Never had a problem doing that with three different trailers over a 30 year span Guy
