I went from the 8.1 with a 4.10 rear axle to a 6.0 with 3.73 Silverado. The 6.0 was better (because of the 6sp transmission). I have since gone to a 6.0 with 3.42 (only available in Express). I can tell the difference.
The best thing is MPG when not towing (which is 90% for me). The 8.1 got 11, the Silverado got 15-17, and the Express gets 16-19.
