Dog owners!

We stayed at a state campground last year and the people in the next site left their little dog in their tent. It barked all day non stop. People across from them said something to them when they returned. Next day they did the same thing. I called the campground. They made the people pack up and leave when they got back.

We have a large dog (Lab). When she goes camping with us she goes with us everywhere. She never barks. She will let us know if someone comes near with a little growl but that's about it.

Oh wow dude, read the 16 previous pages. Besides, dogs can be trained to a lot of things if you work with them when they are young. For example, getting on the furniture. I have friends that say "oh heck, the dog will get on the furniture when were gone so we might as well let it on there all the time." But, I'm on my 3rd house dog in my adult life and have never ever had a problem with them getting on the furniture. Why? because where there puppies I teach them the word NO, and I never let them up on the furniture. As they grow into adulthood the thought of getting up there just never occurs to them. And, trust me I can tell by #1 Sneaking up and looking through the house windows. And #2 by just looking to see if there is any hair or dirt on the furniture. The same way with barking. If they are relaxed, know your going to come back, and have been trained not to bark then it's never a problem. Now, unlike some people here I have used a bark collar. But, once the dog is trained not to bark he no longer needs the collar. He just never thinks about barking.

How do you train a dog not to bark when you are gone, if you are gone.

We were staying at the same park as my folks wintered in, the DW had walked the dogs over to their site which was near the dog walk area for our dogs and theirs to play together for a while. She came back to our rig to retrieve her mobile phone shed forgotten earlier, but left the dogs with my mom.

As she and I left (I'd been showering when she left with the dogs) the guy at the next site stopped us, and before we could say a word, started off on a tirade about leaving the dogs locked in the coach where they'd bark incessantly, it was against the rules and he'd have us thrown out, it was cruel and he was going to call the SPCA and report us for animal abuse, etc., etc., etc.

When I pointed out the dogs were NOT in the coach he called me a liar and became even more enraged.

We just left before it escalated further.

When we returned with the dogs an hour later the folks the other side of us told us the guy had spent most of the hour we were gone knocking on the walls of our unit trying to get the dogs (that weren't there) to bark to prove he was right.


Some people need a hobby I guess.

Because I camp close to home and know how the local cops operate if I were in that situation I would say. "OK, let call the police and let them decide the best course of action." Then I would hand him my cell phone. If he was stupid enough to make the call when the police came out to find the only problem was him he would be in trouble. He probably wouldn't get arrested for anything (Unless he was stupid enough to smart off to the cop) but, he would get his assed chewed for bothering them for no reason.

Dog Folks: What a great idea! Gonna do that, even though our Molly isn't a barker, one can't be sure. Plus she would be safer.

I love my dogs. But the only emergency I can really think of with them being in the rv and us being away, is fire, and I sure as hell don't want people risking their lives for my dogs. I'm not a dog owner so I really don't understand the objection owners have to bark collars. Dogs are not dumb and I think would quickly learn not to to sound off all the time. It's a form of training.

Put it on your neck and try it out. You will soon be against shock collars. It hurts!!

uhh...that's the point.

The Point? It borders on abuse. I still challenge you to try it on your neck.

I have professionally trained all types of dogs for over 30 years, for all types of behaviors and never had to hit, slap, poke, shock or otherwise hurt an animal to achieve a training goal.

Shock collars are for people too lazy to train the dog properly.

Put a fur coat on around your neck, then try the collar. Not so bad now!

We crate the dogs in the bedroom, they sleep. We put the air on for them both to keep them comfortable, and as white noise to block out the outside. They sleep.

Absolutely, and then some !! What burns me up is the folks who complain most about dogs are usually the ones with the PIA little brats running around the campground cutting through other folks sites and being just loud, obnoxious and socially unacceptable in general. It's a shame more folks with obnoxious offspring don't get asked to leave. In my experience it's a lot more common to have unattended out of control brats than dogs.
