So, you're on a highway with a posted speed limit of 65mph and lanes 2,3 & 4 are pacing at that speed. Meanwhile, you are cruising along in lane #1 at 90mph. You look in the rear view mirror and see another vehicle gaining on you quick, doing 110mph. What would do? Would you slow down to 65 and merge into lane #2, or continue cruising at 90, thinking the person behind you is reckless and being a butthead, and continue on your merry way?
Answer honestly!
I'll add to the entertainment, but answer honestly! In this case, it would depend if I am driving my truck, or riding my rocket. If truck, I'd slow, merge into slower lane, to let the "maniac" going 110 mph continue on. If riding my FZ1000, I'd bump up to 115-120 mph, see if he'd take the bait, and how fast is he willing to go. If he is willing to go past 150 mph, which is MY new personal limit, not the bikes, then I'd get out of his way, let him proceed.

^ This. Except I don’t have a crotch rocket......main reason is everytime I get on one I see if I can do a buck fiddy or not. Figured it wouldn’t increase my chances of seeing grandkids in the future, many years ago...lol.
Honestly, I’d slow and get out of the way if I didn’t want to speed up and get out of the way.
Honest question to the slo pokes here. 6am, heading to work (daily). 45-50 mph 2 lane road. 3 of 5 days a week at least, there is someone going 35-40mph holding up traffic. If safe to pass, I leave em in the dust (or rain as the case may be). Sometimes there’s a lineup behind them and have to gut it out for like 5 miles.
The common response after being passed is flipped off, bright lights etc. doesn’t matter if it’s Humberto in a 1979 F100, grandma in a Hunday, or Moonstar in a Suberu.
Who’s wrong in this scenario?? - myredracerExplorer IIWe have HOV lanes on our major highways here. Some drivers think just because they have 2 or more persons in their car, they are *REQUIRED* to drive in the HOV lane. They often drive at, under and sometimes well under the posted speed limit which is so friggin' annoying, especially when drivers in the leftmost fast lane are going waaay above the posted speed limit. Sometimes you can get stuck behind one of them with no possibility of getting around them when traffic is heavy.
We've had some drivers think it's funny to stick a life-like dummy in the passenger seat and drive in the HOV lane. The cops seem to spot them okay but not the slow-pokes. Haven't seen an RV in an HOV lane yet tho. :) - Grit_dogNavigator

Because I know whooo the left lane loafers are now.....can spot 'em in this thread! And they're not happy someone is dissing their leftlane pissoffability of other drivers! LOL
We can also see the selfish folks that think they are more important than all others.
One in the same I’d say..... - pnicholsExplorer II

Seems fairly clear.
“on California roadways with multiple lanes traveling in the same direction a vehicle shall be driven in the lane closest to the right side of the roadway. This lane is typically referred to as the slow lane or #2 lane. Vehicles driving in the left lane (#1 lane or commonly referred to as the fast lane) should be either be overtaking, passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, or be preparing to complete a left turn.”
Let the spinning commence.
No "spin" required, just facts. Your quote (which came directly from the Sacramento Bee artice) is wrong; That is NOT what the California Vehicle Code Section 21654 says (the red flags are "typically referred to", "commonly referred to", and "should be"... California Vehicle code is nothing if not specific, and never uses terms like that). HERE is what it actually says:
21654. (a) Notwithstanding the prima facie speed limits, any vehicle proceeding upon a highway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at such time shall be driven in the right-hand lane for traffic or as close as practicable to the right-hand edge or curb, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
I have underlined the pertinent part that specifically refers to impeding traffic. In other words, if I am NOT traveling at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic, I can drive in the left lane all day long. It is NOT illegal (in California). Which is exactly what my initial post was about:bikendan wrote:
hornet28’s claim is what I was responding to. No, it is NOT the law in California, nor has it ever been. Driving in the left lane is perfectly legal; impeding traffic is not.4x4van wrote:

Or maybe they grew up and learned to drive in a state that it is NOT illegal. Amazing how many of you think that the laws in your state apply nationwide.:S
I wonder how many of you who advocate staying in the left lane learned to drive without being instructed that the left lane was for passing not for driving miles on end when the right lane was open. It's nothing new that it's illegal. It was that way when I started driving back in 1960. Do you just disregard the few signs stating "left lane passing only"
It's the law in California, where you're from
IMHO, the states that have passed the “no left lane unless passing” laws are simply taking an easy way out. It SHOULD be illegal to impede traffic (and likely already IS in those states), and if that's what you are doing, I agree that you ARE an a-hole. And yes, there are plenty of them on the roads. But I don’t understand why so many of you are perfectly OK with being forced into a rougher, more heavily congested lane if it is not necessary and if you are not impeding traffic. - run100ExplorerSo, you're on a highway with a posted speed limit of 65mph and lanes 2,3 & 4 are pacing at that speed.
