There should not need to be laws governing left lane use. It is simple common sense.
Many years ago, my first time driving, riding actually (motorcycle), in Canada, I was amazed by their courtesy. When a Canadian driver in front of me would notice me coming up from behind, they would move to the right shoulder, allowing me to pass, without moving much into the oncoming lane to do so. I noticed this was common practice in Canada, when I traveled there later years too. It's been quite a while, I'm curious if our neighbors to the North, are still this courteous, or if they have moved to our not so friendly road sharing?
Jerry - chuckbearExplorerWe have lived in Florida for almost 30 years and have NEVER seen any law enforcement officer pull over someone in the left lane for being in the left lane. Most times, if the police car is in the left lane everyone slows down and backs up that lane because they are afraid to pass the police car. Then you have both lanes slowed down. Chuck

There you go folks, welcome to the mind-set of the offender.
Very well said in a nutshell here. :S - VeebyesExplorer IISurface conditions of the other lanes & every other excuse to camp out in the left lane aside, if not actively overtaking traffic in the right lane it is simple courtesy to get over & let others who want to go faster, for whatever reason, go by.

It's actually very simple; if you're in the left lane and there's no one in front of you and a line of traffic behind you, move over. It's called being a human being. - wa8yxmExplorer IIIFor assorted reasons I usually "Hang right" mostly because the right side of hte RV has a very large blind spot and I wish to make sure there is no car in it. By taking the right lane.. Well if he wants to run the shoulder that is HIS violation. not mine.
Now If I'm coming up to a left turn I move left. but there is a reason for that. - MFLNomad II

Yep, I have the mindset of an offender, and proud of it. Last time I looked those speed limit signs were mere steel and paint, not carved in stone. They're just reasonable suggestions. I do obey the speed limit where it is sensible to do so: congested areas, work zones, school zones, city surface streets, etc. But the wide-open interstate with little to no traffic? Not a chance.
No sense having a bike that will do 140+ and never get over 75.
Same for stop signs, left turns, u turns etc. It should all be judged by the situation not a ridged set of rules.
All mere suggestions ROFLMAO!
Lol, a bit more than a suggestion, when you can be fined for not following what is posted on the signs! While I sometimes tow in the passing lane, due to issues with the driving lane, I would not stay there, impeding traffic.
My driving when towing is quite different, than when I am not towing, as to following the sign suggestions! I tend to break the rules/limits, when in my mind, the situation, plus lack of traffic warrants making my own rules. However, in the event of a rule enforcement officer stopping me, giving a ticket, or worse, I am willing to pay the fine/punishment, for breaking the rules.
Jerry - mgirardoExplorerGeorgia enacted a similar law a few years ago. I've never seen it enforced.
In GA, the idea is to keep traffic flowing. Someone hogging the left lane causes traffic to slow down. It's not to reward speeders, it is to keep traffic flowing in an effort to reduce accidents.
-Michael - dodge_guyExplorer IIWell I have found it necessary to use the left lane because the right lane is so tore up it makes it impossible to use let alone when towing a trailer. If they want me to stay in the right lane fix the highway. BTW when I do find it necessary to use the left lane I move over when there is a car coming up behind me!
In fact some newly constructed concrete highways setup such bad harmonics you can barley even use the highway!
