We were able to back up and turn around and go out the way we came in. Strange.
That's the protocol - fill up, then pull forward to go inside to pay so the next guy can start filling up behind you. She/he likely knows about how much time it takes a tractor trailer/truck to fill up and figured they had that much time. Smaller rigs fill in much less time.
