Larry, I say HOGWASH on EZ Lube being more expensive. I will not need to write a long post.
Cost of having a mechanic repack bearings by hand = $ 200.00 to $300.00.
Cost of using 8 small tubes of grease, myself, with EZ Lubes once a year = $20.00.
You decide.
What you have conveniently left out is that you still have to disassemble and do a general and brake inspection which requires new grease seals and I would think handpacking the bearings after cleaning and inspection so that $200 to $300 is still going to be required PLUS now that extra grease to use the E-Z Lube feature once a year. That in my book is EXTRA TIME AND $$$. These E-Z lube axles DO NOT ELIMINATE the need for a periodic tear down, cleaning and inspection and if your contention is that the E-Z lube feature can extend that interval I would submit that even a good hand pack with a Moly fortified grease would give you the same or very close over the life of a trailer reliability as using the E-Z lube feature plus an extended complete tear down, inspection and had packing. Of course you do realize that only doing the E-Z lube thing once a year is not following the normal recommended factory maintenance interval say from Dexter. Maybe you would like to tell us with your proposed routine when (i.e. how often) and exactly how you inspect your brakes and bearings w/o incurring that $200 to $300 cost you say you are avoiding now by using the E-Z lube feature. If you're somehow saying you now don't do the $200 to $300 maintenance yearly, but use the E-Z lube system then my contention is that doing the yearly routine is too often and overkill. You could keep your schedule whatever that is and no even do your E-Z lube thing and still have just as reliable and maintained system as adding the E-Z lube routine to whatever extended complete tear down you use along with supplementing that with the E-Z lube system.
Nice try, but trying to make a point where you leave out critical information such as implying that using the E-Z lube somehow eliminates that periodic $200 to $300 hand pack is passing off a "HALF TRUTH" as somehow the whole story.
Good for you in using the "HOGWASH" term and I take no offense like others to it's use except to view it as someone raising the sword so to speak to present and defend an opinion or position.
