Maybe this is the reason:

254.4 million registered passenger vehicles in the United States according to a 2007 DOT study.
1960 population 179,323,175
2010 population 308,745,538
True they are not all on the road at the same time. When I was young (early 60's) I only recall very few two car families by the late 60's most of us boomers were behind the wheel.
