DISH Eastern vs. Western Antennas

Why does DISH have both. As a full time RVer I have been using a DISH 500 and a 211K with DNS. When out East with it abundance of trees it would seem the Eastern Arc would make more sense but when going back out West will the EA still work ? Does the 211K work with both EA and WA antennas
  • In Salem, OR the 72.7 (center of the 3 satellites) would only be 19 degrees above the horizon in LA only 28 so the WA satellites make the most sense. Anytime a satellite is less than 24 degrees above the horizon you will see an odd looking setup as it will appear that the antenna is pointing toward the ground!

Thanks for the info. For an Rver what would be the down side to setting up for the EA and using it out west other than the possibility of obstructions. I can see the need for the EA in the east due to 129 being so low. But can not see the the down side or for that matter why does DISH have both if the EA will work out west? Bob

I am not sure but you might run into the same problem with the eastern sat getting to low when you go west. As the western sat are to low in some of the eastern areas. I know around where my house is you can not hit the 119 sat due to the hill and trees.
  • The EA really does not work well out West because they would be so low on the horizon. The general rule for an RV would be to use the WA everywhere other than the extreme NE and SE but sometimes East Coast travel might still be better served with the EA due to trees.

I have a 1000.4 dish with both the Western Arc (sats 110, 119, and 129) and Eastern Arc (sats 61.5, 72, and 77) arms so I can switch between them.

DISH no longer sells the 1000.4 but it can be bought from eBay and other retailers.

However, the 1000.2 dish also has Western and Eastern arc arms and this dish is available many places.

I use this manual to determine which arc to use: 1000.4 install guide or www.dishpointer.com and see which arc has the highest elevation (plus a clear view).

Sometimes you have the option of using both arcs.

Another benefit of having both arcs . . . local stations . . . some DISH locals have their SD (Standard Definition) channels on one arc, and their HD channels on another.

Dish has EA and WA satellites as neither can service all of their customers. It has nothing to do with RVers but rather their need to service all of their customers no matter where they live (in a house).
To your other question, yes, the 211K will work with both sets of satellites and either antenna.
