StephJ, I really don't think any region has a monopoly on poor driving behavior. As someone else posted, we're a mobile society, you don't know that the guy that stole your parking space is from Florida or Kansas. In fact, I know he was probably from my Region, the upper Midwest, we have the worst drivers. I know this because everytime I get behind the wheel, I don my Robes of Infinite Driving Justice and proclaim sentence on all that are on the roads around me. :B
FWIW, I drove for a living for a couple of years and I soon learned that the roadways are a dynamic mix of different driving styles, skills and habits. I figured out real soon that making a bad situation into MY ISSUE really wasn't benefiting me or anyone else. I try to keep aware of certain patterns, traffic flow, and aberrant behavior for my safety and that is about all I can do.
I was told on a recent trip to NYC not to rent a car but to use public transportation because the traffic is horrendous. Of course, I dismissed this and rented a car. My Wife and I travelled through most of the Burroughs and didn't have an issue at all. Sure, parking is at a premium but it's easily overcome by making good choices like garages and lots rather than on-street parking in certain areas. By the time I left NYC, I should have painted the car yellow and put a meter in it, I fit right in. :W
