Can you guys measure the offset between the ball center line and the bar pivot
center line? On the chart Ron made up above, he assumed a 4" offset. Thinking
more offset better to some point it would become onerous to the function
PS...GMW...from this pic, your tongue looks pointing up and it doesn't
sway? If it should, consider re-adjusting to level or slightly pointing
down
Ben,
The trunnion pivots are 2.75" outboard and approx .75" forward of the center of the ball.
you're right in that pic it does appear the tongue is pointing up, but It's apparently just an illusion created by the angle from where I snapped the pic, because the trailer is level. When setting it up, I took great pains to ensure it was level, because when I first set it up, it was in fact nose high.
It took me the better part of a ( cold ! ) saturday morning to set it up. After a fair bit of studying our local high school parking lot, I found a good size area that was nicely flat and level both directions.
I have not yet seen a new version of the hitch, so I can't comment on whether the new one has more angle to it. I know I have this one dialed almost all the way back. The instructions gave the target angle to strive for for both head tilt and bar angle when all hooked up. So I was out there freezing my tail off with my machinist's protractor trying to get it right.
Another subject slightly: we have had the discussion ( Ron has pointed this out ) that when measuring "restored front end height" using a ruler vs using scales, it is possible with some vehicles to get the measured height back to stock, but not necessairly have thw weight in pounds match stock. I can say that at least on this setup ( Nissan Frontier crewcab, with 19', 3900 pound funfinder ) it did work out that way. Measurement came back to stock height, and CAT scale verified weight was within 20 pounds. I was happy, and continue to be happy. I've pulled from Corpus Christi, to northern Wisconsin, over thru Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico in various weather, and it works well.
When I was first setting it up, I was questioning whether I was getting it right, so I called and talked to them at the factory. He talked me thru it, and also offerd to look it over for free if I wanted to bring it up to the factory. They have a campground there that customers can use.....so I thought that was a nice offer. I thought about doing it just for a little road trip, since they are just up the road from me about 5 hours north. Turned out I was happy with my scale numbers and my tow experience, so I never went to see them. Nice offer of customer service though.
