Excursion overheats&leaks tranny fl towing going 50,uphill

Hello. This is our first time out in our new travel trailer with new to us 2001 Excurion 7.3 diesel. Towing 2015 open range 310bhs 9500 lbs.
We got 40 miles out of town to notice overheating issues, made it to state line, stopped for fuel and to get service. We noticed tranny fluid leaking then gushing from under the car. We got towed to ford dealership. First day nothing on diagnostics. Second day, it's fan clutch. That didn't sound that likely from our reading on the problem, but they were adamant. $600 later we got back on interstate and drove 5 miles and back to dealership. Now they are saying must be two sep issues requiring new radiator AND new tranny. Now, this transmission works great when not towing, shifts great, never overheats. Same with the tranny fluid leak--only when towing. We were supposed to be off on a 6-week dream trip planned forever. Us and 5 kids. If we need to replace all that, there goes our vacation fund and we can go somewhere for a week, then home. We don't have a lot of money, we have invested so much in this dream. The excursion has cost us $6k over purchase price already. If anyone has experienced or heard of or has any other ideas, we're pretty bummed. Having fun camping but we would like to be able to pull out trailer. We have to do something soon. Thanks!

  • I have a lot (over 60K miles towing at a GCW of 17K) of experience with the same drive train as you have, but I have the 4.10 and think you might have the 3.73 and something doesn't sound right. Now I have a BTS "BUILT" tranny, but I have had the bypass go bad and that drove the tranny temps thru the roof and I think you would have problems temp wise even not towing with a bad bypass, but checking that is very simple and takes less than 10 min. Mine went south within 50K miles, but some go forever it's just the luck of the draw. Also, the fix is about $50 for a new bypass and maybe 30min to install. As mentioned you should have the in radiator cooler in addition to the external OTA cooler, but the early Super Duties did not and that is something you should confirm first and again is less than a 2 min job.

I know you have sunk a lot of $$ into this so far, but I'm a firm believer in bullet proofing that tranny and taking that only potential weak link in an otherwise legendary power train out of the equation. If it was me I would beg, borrow or steal and pony up the $5 to 6K and make a trip to Lead Hill, Ar and have Brian do his magic and you will never have to worry about tranny issues again. With your location that is should only be about a days drive hopefully. I have my tranny done back in 2004 with the factory warranty on the tranny still in effect with only 34K miles on it and have never looked back.

  • I'm guessing the trans may have been so hot it was boiling and spewing out fluid. I wouldn't try that kind of towing if the trans did not have an external cooler. Just because the car had a 10,000 lb hitch doesn't mean it is equipped to pull that much. I with the guy that said you better solve the heating issue before you install and fry another trans.
  • I would leave the dealer for a radiator shop and a transmission shop for a second opinion.

My two cents says you just have an overheat problem. New radiator, coolant and thermostat would be my start point.
  • Yep, could be the thermostat if your tranny works like mine. Could be stuck and fluid is bypassing the cooler.

I have the same transmission, and tow a lot heavier including in temps over 110F, and have never overheated the trans on the highway.
  • Does your radiator have an in-tank cooler, in addition to the oil-to-air cooler? If not, than a new radiator with the in-tank cooler is nearly a must for that much weight.

Sadly, with the "gushing" symptom, you probably do need a new trans. Just be sure the root cooling cause is addressed before letting them install a new trans that may get cooked as well.

Also, there's sometimes a bypass valve on the transmission that fails and causes overheating. Do you have a trans temp gauge by chance? Are you able to read your actual coolant temps, via a device such as a ScanGuage?
