Extended warranties

Friend of mine is looking for companies that provide extended warranties for his motor home. He knows of Good Sam. What are some of the others? Good or bad experience?

Thanks
  • Never go by what an extended warranty brochure says - they promise a lot and it looks like they cover everything but they don't detail what they don't cover and when they won't cover things. You want to see the actual contract agreement. Good Sam does have theirs for download on their website. Read any one of these carefully and then decide if it is worth the monthly cost. Also most coincide with the manufacturers warranty and for as long as you have the regular warranty the Extended Warranty cannot be used - so you are paying for a plan that does nothing until your regular warranty is up. Many plans charge a lot more to start them after the regular warranty is up because then they have to pay if something needs repair.
  • Yes the dealers recommend them. I was with Polaris ATV dealer and you could sell one at cost and then add the extended warranty and still make good money.
  • If I had a gasser, I probably would not have purchased an EW, but diesel engines and trans parts can be very expensive, so I bought an EW through ExtraRide. According to Cummins Coach Care facility, they are the easiest to work with and get approval on parts and labor.

I am very glad I purchased this for our DP because in the first year, I had to have both fuel pumps replaced(leaking fuel)to the tune of almost $3000. Shortly after that the generator kept shutting down. Turned out the over heat temp sensor was bad and labor and parts for that was over $500. A year later the fridge needed a new cooling unit to the tune of $2200(parts and labor).

ExtraRide paid for all of this without any negotiating or trying to deny anything. I am definitely money ahead, and I have 3 more years of coverage left on the policy.
  • I have the GS extended warranties on both my 5th Wheel and Truck. I have used the warranty 2 different times on the truck. No problem as long as the one doing the work contacts the warranty people first. It has saved me many thousands of dollars so far.
  • Consider this; they make their money by not paying and will vigorously pursue every option not to pay.
  • We just purchased our RV so we haven't had to use the coverage, but we purchased a Route 66 policy with our new rig. It's more like insurance than a warranty, but it covers a whole bunch of stuff for only a few dollars a month. Our dealer (who I've worked with for over 20 years and trust) recommends it. Since we're going full-time, we wanted the extra security - and Route 66 can't cancel you like GS is known to do.
