Aug 29, 2016I have met a number of transport drivers in my travels around the country, so I have no doubt that bad drivers are a minority. I had a long chat with a driver in Sidney, Nebraska who was towing a huge fifth-wheel with his Dodge Ram with a Cummins Turbo Diesel. He also delivers farm equipment or anything for a buck, he says. I got the most insight about driving from him and how he avoids empty miles. One thing that stuck with me is his comment on "**** Tires". On one 1,700 mile drive two tires completely blew apart and a third developed several goose egg bulges. There was substantial damage to the sides and trim of the RV as well as the underside. They tried to put the blame on him, but he was one step ahead. He showed me his gadgets such as dash cams, wireless backup cam for the trailer and some gizmo that plugs into the truck's diagnostic port for lower rates on insurance. He also subscribes to a GPS tracking service that dispatches him on jobs. He has a permanent record of where he's been, where he is and how fast he is going. I am no stranger to Big Brother having worked for a utility company that tracked us with GPS. This guy makes the system work for him. His wife follow him often driving a motor home delivery. She told me that half of the motor homes she drives are for people that fly to a destination and drive home. Great idea for people with a time budget.
About **** tires; my buddy drove all the way to Indiana to get his fifth-wheel, so he knows every mile those wheels have traveled. No one else to blame. He has had to replace all the tires and the spare prematurely. He too had to have thousands of dollars in repairs due to tire failure.
