Good friend had just brought his 30' Toyhauler home from storage to load for a trip, on Xmas eve day. Loaded all the toys, tools, riding gear, clothes, etc. Only thing left was food. Planning on pulling out in the afternoon Xmas day. Parked in front of his house, with a good quality hitch lock (the type with the ball that locks inside the coupler). At 4am Xmas morning (all caught on surveillance camera), a truck pulled up, two guys removed the hitch lock (couldn't see exactly how they did it in the video, and they left no pieces), and the entire rig was gone within 5 minutes.

Around the same time period, another toyhauler was stolen in the same area, this one was hitched up to a motorhome, locked to the hitch, with a jeep parked behind it. Thieves cut the hitch lock, dragged the front of the trailer out sideways onto the street (damaging the back of the motorhome and the front of the jeep in the process), and then hooked up and took off. Again, right around 5 minutes.

So while hitch locks may slow a thief down, it won't slow a knowledgeable thief down very much. A heavy chain through the wheel spokes in addition to a hitch lock? Just another delay that might convince a thief to go to the next trailer down.

This reminds me of the guy who built a 30amp plug in post, out of a 4x4 post and some extra wire.

He would come up to the Balsam Mt campground in the GSMNP, put his post up, throw the wire over into the bushes, and plug his camper into it.

In no time at all he would have someone asking him why he deserved power when no on else had it.

Or someone would be walking through the campground complaining.

Had one guy tell me he was not going to run his generator, he was going to plug into that post. I told him before he did he should take a good look at the bottom, it was sitting on the asphalt with 2x4 legs. He got over his anger real quick.

Make this guys day and go ask him about the chain.

This works great at Quartzsite too. Mainly folks from California that take the bait.

If I am worried about security, out come a pair of high test chains, each goes through the wheels on the side and through the suspension. I then use a high security padlock from Abus or another "Sold Secure Gold" brand. Then, just to show that the trailer is secured, I toss a trailer lock on the tongue, mainly to tell a would-be thief that the trailer isn't easy pickings.

If a thief is so desperate for a lab annex that they snap both locks and the tongue lock, that's what insurance is for. Generally, they will go look elsewhere for easier pickings.

Now, burglary of a rig... different story altogether.

Are you sure that he's worried about losing the chain or is he worried about someone stealing his lock.
