Fiamma Safe door

While looking at a friend's European motorhome, they use these (another link, and here.)

I wonder how useful these would be in the US. They would not stop a dedicated intruder, but definitely slow them down, and might be useful (assuming they could be locked an open position so one doesn't find an unpleasant surprise, courtesy of some random kids) as another method of keeping the inside secure when the rig is in storage and nobody is at home.

  • Interesting. I wonder of there's a way to prevent some jokester from flipping up the lock at night, trapping you inside?
  • I look at security similar to the parable of the hungry bear. You don't have to be the fastest guy in the bunch, just faster than the slowest. If my rig is just a tad more secure than everyone elses... but not so much secure that it attracts unwanted interest, then the thieves will go for the easier targets. Especially if they are able to see inside, and there is nothing visible that is of any value.

However, if I were storing my rig closer to Austin, I'd leave it unlocked and toss in an old, but intact looking television in a storage compartment. That way, if the tweakers have their hands full with some goodie, they won't be ripping the wiring from the walls for copper. Same concept as mugging money.

The better you lock it, the more they will trash it.. If they want in there is only one thing going to stop them.. THE OWNER.. with one of a few accessories I wont name.

My idea of an a security system (Burgler alarm) Two models.

1: When the premiter is breached the house theater system comes on and starts playing a CD.. 30 to 60 seconds of silence then SHHHAAA-SHUUUNK of a shotgun being racked.. NOTE, there is no gun, Just the sound. (What self respecting burgler is going to stick around and wait for the BOOM?)

    2: The P-K9 System

Burgler breaks into house/RV and as he is loading the silver into the pillowcase hears a voice say softely "Jesus is watching you".. He freezes.. then hearing nothing further carefully looks around and returns to work, Again he hears "Jesus is watching you" Finally on the 3rd time he identifies the source, the family Parrot.

So what, You are just a stupid parrot in a cage, what can you do?
"Oh, I'm not Jesus, My name is Moses, and Jesus is watching you"
Gee, what kind of idiot names his parrot Moses?
"The same kind that names his Rottweiler Jesus, And Jesus is watching you"

There are a lot of windows that work great as access if you have a special lock.
If they want in they will get in.

IF 'they' are honest a lock isn't necessary

And YES I agree.....windows are just as easy of an access.
Thieves do NOT care how they get in......just that they do
  • that special lock he was talking about with the windows, is called a rock

I just leave mine unlocked because there's nothing inside that would cost as much as fixing a damaged door.

Absolutely correct, a lot of people miss that fact, I did.

At our home we had deadbolt locks. The lock held but the door and frame were destroyed allowing the thieves to enter.
  • A lock will only be as strong as the material it is mounted on. Unless there is some serious reinforcing, I would think the lock would just pull right out of the material. It would probably keep out the casual thief, but I imagine almost any lock will do that.
