Fiberglass Shower to tub (add a lip)

We are looking at units with stand up showers. It would be nice to have a tub for our daughter to take baths as she is young.

My question is this though:

The showers are all one piece fiberglass. IS there a somewhat easy way to add a water tight lip to the front of that?

It would be nice to remove the glass enclosure, add the lip so it was more like a tub and just use a curved shower pole to keep the shower water in when we shower.

Obviously there are other options of varying difficulty.

I'm aware that I could attempt to rip out the existing stuff and put something else in there. This would be a huge PIA as there isn't a ton of room to get the new tub in there (even a small one) while the walls and everything are up. Those hallways and doors are pretty tight. Might be possible but a PIA.

We know there are inflatable tubs. We could use a larger file bin type plastic box. All options we've thought of and certainly easier.

Just wondering if there is a somewhat easy way to add a lip to that fiberglass structure without it looking like a total mess or worse leaking.

Figuring not, just wanted to see if anyone had another idea.
  • Mine has a tub enclosure. You just have to look. And we used it to bathe my son when he was younger on one trip. We were at a state park without sewer hookup and draining the tub killed my gray water capacity. Had to lug water to the dump site constantly.

After that, he sat in the empty tub and we washed him with the shower hose.

I would simply teach her how to use the shower, and get an additional shower head holder mounded at a good height for her. I would also suggest an adjustable mount.
  • I figured as much but figured I'd see if someone else had a better idea. The plastic tub will work for now until we transition her to a shower.

Thanks for the input folks, appreciate the thoughts.
  • I would be shopping for a washtub...or use the kitchen sink if it's big enough. If you're worried about splashed messiness and wet floors with the shower (rather than the general concept of a shower which some kids really don't like), using the outdoor shower if you have one could solve that difficulty. You could rig up a tarp or something for privacy if the setting demands.
  • Our girls (5 and 3) just shower with us. Our shower stall is large enough for an adult and child to get clean (2 adults could stand in there but not be very productive).

Is she old enough, and do you have the room to accomplish this? Do you have the water capacity to do the bath tub idea?

We have a 6g water heater, but that is more than adequate for one adult and child to clean, let the heater come back up to temp, then let the other pair get clean.
  • I don't think you'll find anything that will work very well, that will be water proof and last. Shower pans are just not made to be used as bath tubs, unless they come with a higher lip to begin with.

Another thing you have to consider, your camper has only a 6 or 10 gallon water heater. That REALLY is not much water, even mixed with cold to make lukewarm water. You may get, at best 10 or 11 gallons of lukewarm water for a 6 gallon water heater.

But, if you still want to try the bathtub thing in your camper, a more practical way to test your idea, to test how much warm water you have available for a bath, is to simply put a tub that is big enough your child can fit in, yet small enough it will fit in the shower.

I love shopping at TSC (Tractor Supply Company). Looking at their web site, here's a suggestion: Click here. I suggest going to one of their stores and measure the dimension of the tub and make sure you can get it in the shower. If not, maybe you can find another farm implement dealer that sells cattle troughs or cattle feeders. They come in all shapes and sizes and from Rubbermaid rubber to aluminum. I bought a round tub for my sister to wash her dog in at home. She love it!

Good luck! (or ... just let your child take a shower. It's really a much easier solution).
