FIC Lock Recall

All,

In mid-October I received a recall notice for the locks on my travel trailer. Apparently some locks are defective and it is possible to be locked inside the trailer. So I called them, received new locks, and just installed them. Thought I would post it here as I haven't seen it previously.

The recall is for locks manufactured between January 1, 2006 and April 30, 2013. Only FIC locks which have an integrated deadbolt are effected.

To determine if you have an effected lock look at your key. If it is a FIC key and it has one of the following key codes:
HF-304, 307, 308, 309, 311, 313, 315, 316, 320, 322, 323, 328, 331, 335, 336, 339, 342, 343, 347, 349 it is effected. If you don't have the original keys, these numbers can be found on a white label, attached to the main body of the lock under the interior paddle handle (you have to remove 4 screws on the inside to see it). To contact the manufacture, call 800-837-2505.

I didn't want to fuss with trying to post the recall notice, but if someone else wants to do that, send me a PM and I will scan and email it back.

Steve

  • You can only remove the cylinder if the lock is first put into the unlocked position. The removal key will not work on a locked trailer.
  • I agree Joe. The cheesy locks are only going to keep out an honest thief. The cylinders are super easy to remove. Kinda scary easy. Sorta makes one wonder why there are locks at all, but none-the-less, an easy replacement that will only take minutes. I had 2 different keys and they sent all cylinders keyed the same. Works for me. Now I only have 1 key to jack with for both doors.

BTW, they also send easy to follow instructions. YouTube not necessary. ;)
  • Thanks for bringing this up again. For some reason, I didn't spot it the first time, that I have one of the effected key numbers, on my 2008 Lance truck camper. Went to the previous thread mentioned by wbrown62, filled out the form and submitted it online. My 5th wheel key, also one of the FIC brand locks, wasn't included in the recall apparently. Their web site is saying 8 to 10 days to receive the new lock cylinder and tools to change it. As I watched the Youtube video on how to change the cylinder, it occurred to me, how easy it would be for someone with that removal tool to break into any FIC lockset.
    thanks again to all.
