I understand the rules for not carrying firewood from location to location. So to avoid most arguments we typically don't have a fire.. although my wife wants one each time we camp. Not sure how it wo...

Instead, I find a local mill, buy scrap pieces of -untreated- lumber, preferably 4x4s, and have them cut to 15 inch lengths. Since the wood pieces are cured, there are no bugs present that would hitch a ride to new areas. They also burn quite well.
we no longer carry firewood...too much unnecessary weight. on the rare occasions we have a fire we buy it in town or at the campground. I do carry a small tub of kindling made from 1x2 lumber.
