Camping without a campfire just is not not something I want to do. When we went cross country earlier this year I filled a tub with throwaway construction scrap, 2 X 4&6's. Each state has different rules regarding the importation of firewood and we always comply.
Here in Arizona you can transport wood with few restrictions but if we are going out of state we only transport the construction scrap that is legal everywhere. Most CG's allow you you to pick up "downed" wood (always ask first), and by carrying a small chainsaw, splitter/maul, axe, hatchet etc., we are able to make use of wood that was too large for others. Arriving on a Sunday or Monday as we frequently do, almost guaranties us a nice supply of local firewood from abandoned campsites.
Works for me. :C
