I understand the rules for not carrying firewood from location to location. So to avoid most arguments we typically don't have a fire.. although my wife wants one each time we camp. Not sure how it wo...

It's not as bad as that, though certainly it's bad enough. The areas outlined in blue below are the current Federal Quarantine areas; these are the only areas where the USDA would be performing inspections/certifications. The only reason for my post was to clear up confusion as to when the USDA inspection shield must be on firewood. I got the impression that there was a misunderstanding that it should be on any firewood bundle, no matter where it came from. This isn't correct- it must appear only on wood that comes from inside those boundaries.

I'm not sure what you mean "it's not as bad as that". Count your "outlined in blue", it is 22 states and Canada just as you quoted me AND the stamp must also be on firewood brought INTO quarantined areas. Some states have been lenient on this regulations as most of their Ash population already have been decimated.
Colorado is listed but not yet an official quarantine state.
