FL panhandle

I've gone back through some old threads I subscribed to for advice.
We will be going to Topsail Hill for 5 days this June.
Hard to get much of anywhere from this far south in FL. It takes about 8 or so hours to get to a state line.
This will be our first week vacation in 42 years.
Would like to see some of the "must sees" around the panhandle, and will probably go as far as NOLA, just because we can.
Any ideas on must see or do's greatly appreciated.
  • The museum at Pensacola is good. Also check out Ft. Pickens. There is a real nice nat park campground there. If you want to camp there, you MIGHT be able to get reservations.
NOLA can be lots of fun. The WW2 museum is fabulous. Be sure to take in the movie. Bayou Segnette SP in Westwego is only about 20 min from the quarter.
Do you fish? If you do, Grand Isle SP is fun. Make reservations early. If you don't like fishing, there really isn't much point in going.
Have fun. Eat lots while in NOLA. It really is as good as you've heard.
  • I also recommend the air museum. Went there when son got his officer certification. Today he is close training new pilots how to fly. Would love to go back just a long ways from the Texas Panhandle.
  • One of the nicest things about the Naval Aviation Museum - if you have children, they won't be bored. Especially the Blue Angels if they're in town.
I spent two years in Pensacola aboard the USS Lexington (CVT-16) when stationed there. A WWII era aircraft carrier. We trained new pilots. Not easy to land on a flat surface that moves up and down with the waves. Especially if its your first time. One day, they asked if anyone would like to fly second seat and I jumped at the chance. Takeoff was great. The flight was great. Hitting the "three wire" (retaining cable) when landing took my breath away - literally. I couldn't draw a breath for a few seconds due to the sudden stop. Was it fun? Yep. Would I do it again? Nope.
  • I also second seeing the Naval Museum at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. Close to it is also a light house that is well Wirth seeing and an old Fort. You could spend a very nice day at the Naval Air Station.
  • Tuesday is when the blue angels practice. It is quite a sight. They have retired volunteer pilots that explain all the stunts. They have bleachers there to sit on. We loved it!
  • If you're going to Louisiana, stop at Poche's Fish 'N Camp in Breaux Bridge for a couple of nights. Right in the heart of Cajun country. Great food.
  • Break your trip in half and spend a couple of nights at Stephen Foster State park along the Suwanee river or stop over at Salt Springs National Rec area in the Ocala National Forest. The Pensacola Naval Air Museum is great. If you are a state park camper most of the time you might find the new loop at Grayton Bch SP more to your liking over Topsail.
  • Don't miss the Naval Museum at Pensacola (I think that is the name). It is fantastic, free admission and free parking. Take a guided tour by one of the volunteers - it makes things come to life so much better than reading all the informative little cards.

This is the home of the Blue Angels flying team.
