Folding Murphy bed mattress is unbearable

Just picked up our 2014 Alumalite 238MBS. Great trailer.

Well built and really like the murphy bed design. Tons of room with the bed folded up out of the way.

Problem is the three-section folding mattress. It's a cheap, thin foam that provides no support. It's stitched into a fabric cover that folds into three sections.

Now I'm trying to find a replacement mattress that still folds into three sections.

Something in a memory foam. Any ideas?

  • We have a self inflating camping mat (REI, Bass Pro, Cabelas's, etc.) that is 3" thick, about 30" wide and 72" - 80" long. Each person has their own. We put it on top of each sleeping surface and it improves things reasonably well.
  • Make a visit to an independent mattress builder, with the TT. Likely will get a solution there.

  • I'd say you may need to go semi-custom for replacement. Now there is standard foam, Visco foam and a Gel foam (some cool, some ventilated) toppers in 2-4".

If you find a type of foam that is comfortable and fits the space, you can cut it into the 3 sections.

Or if you prefer find a local foam store where you can test, buy and have them cut to fit. Any zipped mattress cover will usually fold into the 3 sections. You'll only run into problems if they need to be separated and then you'd have to cover each section individually. Not too hard, either, using some flat sheets for covering. Cut and sew like a huge pillow case and then hand stitch the ends shut or fold inside to remove easily for cleaning.
  • we roll our foam topper up and store it in the bathtub on our Hybrid.
  • You can have a 3-fold mattress made specifically for your wants, tastes and desires if you're not able to utilize the other suggestions.

  • Had same problem on first RV/TT. Just bought memory foam and folded it back when not in use. Held it in folded position with light weight cord attached to cabinets on either side. Did not look as neat as the original but it worked.
BTW still have that old foam one stored under a bed in s&b. Anybody want it - free!

The problem with that is storage. What to do with it when the bed is folded away?

  • Maybe pull this one apart and replace the foam with memory foam?

Not sure how big a job that would be though, you might be able to find a local upholstery shop that can do it.
