Follow up on my Forest River 8293 Front cap being loose.

I finally tackled the problem of my front cap, which is the entire front of my camper being loose and requiring me to re-seal after each camping trip.

I pulled the side trim strips and found that it had no screws holding the cap to the aluminum frame.

I added 25 sheet metal screws on each side and used Lexel roof sealer, which is also a glue, between the plastic cap and the frame. I really don't think I even needed the screws after the Lexel dried, but I always over do things. I also used the Lexel to completely seal the sides and the bottom on each side so no water can get to any part of the metal frame.

Anyway, after 5 camping trips it is perfect, no movement at all. I am sure this is something anyone can do to save $700, which was the estimated cost to have it done.
  • Thanks for the update and I'm glad it worked out for you without finding the usual water damage.

Are you saying that it came from the factory with NO screws holding this thing together ??:E I'd be making some sort of complaint to Forest River about this. How old is this unit?

The Cap Screw guy was off sick the day his unit was built.
  • My front cap was all wrinkled on the top and was replaced with a new one which is still wrinkled. I sealed it with Eternabond any how just in case.
  • Forest River Wildcat 5ers built early 2000 era had plastic front caps with no screws, they floated under the corner molding. Putting screws in the cap caused the plastic caps to crack and break along the sides. We have one in the shop now trying to figure out a fix to keep it from leaking again.
  • My Forest River Rockwood SS Lite is a 2008 model. The front cap is molded with an S shape on each side so it can expand and contract without putting lots of tension on the fasteners. So it was built to be attached to the frame, someone just forgot to put the screws in it.

There were not any screws in it and that is the reason it kept moving when I towed the camper. It would move as much as 1/2 inch from side to side. I continually resealed it with rubber caulk and had a heck of a mess to clean up when I repaired it.
